WHY HIGH TEA IS NOT A FANCY AFTERNOON TEA PARTY

The distinction between high and low tea is a cultural one that refers to the height of the table not the fare itself.  Afternoon tea is 'low tea' and refers to a small meal of  snacks and tea first served in Britain in the afternoon on a low table.  The classic afternoon tea  features a snacking menu traditionally served on a three tiered tray:  

• COURSE 1 - finger sandwiches 
• COURSE 2 - scones with jam and cream
• COURSE 3 - desserts, petit fours

Hot teas of various flavors and champagne are classic afternoon tea beverages.

High tea refers to the evening meal served in British working class households around 6p.m. The menu consists of hearty fare such as soup, bread or shepherd's pie.  Dinner tables were higher than the low tables on which afternoon tea was served, which why high tea is not afternoon tea.

​Now that you know the difference between high and low tea, here are some important tea etiquette tips:
When holding a tea cup, don't wing out your pinky finger.
Don't blow on hot tea to cool it down.
Some tea rooms serve the food on the traditional three tier tray and take the words 'finger foods' literally.   They do not give you a fork or a spoon, just a small butter knife.  Never eat food from the edge of your knife.  Ask for a fork if you are uncomfortable eating with your fingers.
Afternoon tea can be fancy or simple.  The true spirit of afternoon tea is to share friendship and relaxation with friends and family.
